We’ve heard nothing but good things about More Than A Game, the documentary about LeBron James and his St. Vincent-St. Mary High School teammates helmed by Akron native Kristopher Belman, who started the project nine years ago as a thesis project for Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television. The film enjoyed an enthusiastic reception in its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, with James getting a five-minute standing ovation following the screening. Expect to hear more about More over the next year: Variety reports Lionsgate has purchased the rights for the film with plans for a fall 2009 release. The trade rag describes the film “not merely as a record of James’ achievements but as a feel-good story of overcoming adversity.” Other reviews from the premiere make the obligatory comparisons to Hoop Dreams, the gold standard of sports documentaries. Filmgoers can only hope the product realizes the hype as well as its subject has. Source Sports Illustrated. More about ‘More Than a Game’ – click here.
