Sport Science: Breaking Down LeBron James’ Chase Down Block

Over the last two years the Chasedown Block has become one of LeBron James’ signature moves. Actually, the Cavaliers have been keeping track of the new stat. A “chase down” refers to a block from behind or the side, usually when a defender catches an offensive player who is running ahead. They often come in situations where the ballhandler assumes he’s got an easy basket or, at the least, an uncontested one. The style of block was nicknamed by Cavs television voice Fred McLeod, who first started to notice it when he worked for the Detroit Pistons and Tayshaun Prince made a habit of it. James has mastered this technique as seen very often on NBA’s daily Top 10 plays. If you’d like to learn a little bit more about the Chasedown Block check out the following episode of Sport Science.
