Design Process: Nike LeBron X Z-Corp 3D Part

Certainly you’re familiar with the Nike LeBron X in its final form, but along the way, as often happens, tweaks and changes occurred during the design process. During the early stages of the X’s creation, this Z-Corp 3D part was printed up, helping to shape the direction of the design and give a sense of the shoe’s proportions and panels. While the outsole didn’t change much at all, the upper was at one point headed a very different direction, with fully visible dynamic Flywire, a more sculpted midsole and a sweeping collar strap all playing an early role. Much of that changed along the way as per LeBron’s specific feedback and some refining by designer Jason Petrie. As for the funky and unique reverse logo placement? That was all a call made specifically by King James. “We gave [LeBron] some Swoosh pieces and let him tape it where he wanted it to be,” reveals Leo Chang, Nike Basketball Design Director.
